Compressors are very loud. Before we go into how to quiet them down, here are some examples of loud compressors you could have in your shop.

Small air-cooled piston.

A small shop compressor is commonly used. Mechanical noise from the pistons and fan, as well as intake noise during pumping, are inherent in these machines. Noise levels can reach 90-95 decibels.

Compressors with Rotary Vanes

Unenclosed compressors often use a sliding vane inside an aluminium case, which produces a high pitch sound that may be highly irritating as well as uncomfortable. The noise intensity might vary between 85 and 95 decibels.

Over 50 HP Reciprocating Water-Cooled Compressors

These older machines are mechanically loud, making a huge engine seem like it’s operating. The “wumpa, wumpa” compression noise sound that emerges from the inlet filter and may carry through walls as well as long distances is quite irritating.

Here are some methods that may be useful in reducing noise :

  1. Remove the compressor from the work or office area and place it in a remote section of the building.
  2. Install sound curtains or “Soundown” material on the room walls or hang it around the device in an open area to insulate it.
  3. To reduce intake compression noise, install an inlet filter silencer on the tiny piston or a designed inlet pulsation bottle on the big reciprocating compressor.
  4. Pipe the piston compressors’ intake outdoors to reduce compression noise in the building, installing silencers as necessary in #3 to avoid neighbour complaints.
  5. Determine whether the rotary screw may be refitted with a sound enclosed cabinet as a manufacturer’s optional kit.
  6. Install a flex line between the compressor and the main piping system to prevent harmonics from entering the plant.
  7. To decrease fan noise in the compressor room, route the fan on the rotating screws outdoors with sound attenuation ducting.
